What makes Associates in Medical Weight Management stand apart from everything you’ve ever tried in the past?
Medical weight loss clinics are a superior option than commercial weight loss programs to help you control weight. There are several advantages for you to see a physician at a medical weight loss clinic over a non-medically based weight loss program. One of the benefits of being under the care of a bariatrician working out of medical weight loss clinic is the possibility of receiving weight loss prescriptions. Have you ever had difficulty staying on a weight loss program due to hunger or a lack of fullness after eating “normal” sized portions? Does your struggle lie in maintaining your weight loss? Prescription medication may help. In fact, they can be just the boost you need to make a program successful for you. Studies have shown that the prescription weight loss medications currently available can improve the outcome of your weight loss efforts, particularly when offered to you combination with a complete weight loss program. FDA approved prescription weight loss medications have been shown in clinical trials to be safe and effective.
If you are a patient seeing our doctors at our NJ medical weight loss clinics you may receive such a prescription. Weight loss in this manner is long-lasting when implemented along with lifestyle modifications. Please note: you must be an appropriate candidate to qualify for weight loss prescriptions. Prescription weight loss medications may not be appropriate or suitable for everyone. Only the doctor can assess your eligibility.
The selection of prescription weight loss medications are as varied as the patients who use them, but in general, fall into two major categories:Appetite Reduction and Satiety Promoting Medications: These prescription weight loss medications specifically treat chemicals in your brain that reduce appetite or promote a sense of fullness, resulting in a decrease in caloric intake. Some are approved for short-term use by the FDA (one year at the most). Another product, Meridia, has been approved to be used long term. Its strong point is in its ability to promote a sense of fullness and assist in maintaining achieved weight loss. A prescription for Meridia may be considered the drug of choice if you are a yo-yo dieter, that is, you easily lose weight but you have trouble maintaining your weight loss. Prescriptions for these medications isn’t appropriate for you if you have uncontrolled blood pressure or certain heart problems. Fat Absorption Reduction Medications: A relatively new advance in the field of weight loss prescriptions, obesity drugs such as Xenical inhibit fat digestion in the stomach and small intestine. As these medications don’t directly affect the patient's nervous or cardiovascular systems, they’re considered a safe alternative for patients with a risk of high blood pressure or heart disease. When used strategically within a structured medical weight loss program, such as that provided at our medical weight loss clinic, the likelihood of side effects is minimal and this drug can be very effective. Xenical has just been approved by the FDA to be sold over-the-counter at a reduced dose. It will be the first FDA-approved prescription weight loss medication to go over-the counter. There are a number of other medications that have been shown in studies to be effective in the treatment of obesity and are only available by prescription. Each has its own unique applications, and may be prescribed in our weight loss clinic to help you. Only a complete evaluation can help determine what specific intervention would work best for you, given your unique medical needs.
Several other promising weight loss prescription medications are on the horizon. Medications that are currently in clinical trials will be made available to you from our medical weight loss clinic once they are approved by the FDA. One promising new drug is rimonabant, and it is expected to be approved this summer. More information to follow when it becomes available!
Prescription weight loss medications are a better alternative than taking over the counter (non-prescription) weight loss medications to help you lose weight. The vast majority of over-the-counter (non-prescription) weight loss medications promise you miraculous results, such as melting away your fat cells (or some similar claim), just by ingest the recommended daily dose. We want to help you be an informed consumer! What these advertisers don't address in their claims are outcomes data of any randomized controlled trials (clinical studies) conducted by the manufacturer to evaluate efficacy, safety and side-effect profiles of these products. The labeling on dietary supplement can’t make a claim to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat or prevent disease (such as obesity) or they fall under the category of a “drug” which requires the product to undergo the intense scrutiny of the FDA prior to approval for marketing. Currently, any firm that manufactures non-prescription weight loss medications, marketed as dietary supplements, doesn’t have to provide FDA with the evidence it relies on to substantiate safety or effectiveness before or after it markets its products (except under certain circumstances). Moreover, there are no FDA regulations that are specific to dietary supplements that establish a minimum standard of practice for manufacturing dietary supplements. What this means to you is that the possible dangers inherent with any form of self-medication (especially unregulated compounds marketed as dietary supplements) can post serious risks your health. With respect to non- prescription weight loss medications our philosophy is “caveat emptor”- let the buyer beware.

Medical weight loss clinics are a more suitable setting to provide personalized assistance than other medical facilities. Our practice is focused exclusively on weight management.Physicians work in a medical “practice” where they “practice medicine”. As physicians gain experience practicing medicine, they become more skilled in their particular field of study. A physician who has a practice dedicated to a particular area of interest, such as weight management, receives more training and has more practical experience in that area of interest and becomes an expert in that field. Physicians who are experts in their fields (such as bariatricians) are best equipped to help you. A medical weight loss clinic is the most logical option as a facility to meet all your weight loss needs.
